Worship on Sundays at 10:30am
Presently our Sunday Worship Service is a blend of the traditional and the progressive: traditional in the sense that it is modeled on a fluid liturgy of song, sermon, prayer and hospitality; progressive in the sense of more times of stillness and silence, as well as blending in of elements from other spiritual traditions, and using inclusive language (as much as possible). We are not a 'creedal' community in any way. This also reflects in our worship. As in our overall theological outlook, our worship is experiential and a blend of challenging preaching, breathtaking music from our talented choir, as well as moments of needed stillness and deep prayer and of course.... laughter! Laughter and joy is a big part of our core identity. Overall, our collective spiritual experiences during worship are geared toward 'experiencing' God, rather than 'believing in' God. Come and visit us and experience our worship firsthand.
We often hold special services to recognize a variety of movements in the liturgical and secular year. At Faith UCC, you will find special themed services throughout the year - Justice Sunday’s (especially around Martin Luther King, Jr., PRIDE and Earth Day to name a few); Healing services; Cantatas and Music Sunday’s as well as services such as Blessing of the Animals. Worship is always deeply meaningful, engaging and fresh. We take it very seriously as a way to experience God together as a beloved community.
At Faith UCC, as in the United Church overall, we recognize the sacraments of Baptism and Communion, which we see as acts of radical welcome in a world that desperately needs that welcome. Baptism is celebrated as requested and Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of the month, and now on Tuesday Morning's at 9:30am during a Centering and Communion Service. All are welcome at our table - as it should be everywhere. Our table is one of togetherness and interconnection reflective of the many tables Jesus dined at.
And the music - let's not forget the music! The Faith Church Choir is wonderful and always contributing powerfully in many ways to our worship experiences. The choir is directed by Brian Smawley, who has directed professional choirs for many years. Our musician is Carolyn Wong, who also teaches music professionally. We have several paid soloists and offer a variety of musical genres to keep the music inspiring and moving. We are always on the lookout for new choir members. Choir practice is open to all each Wednesday evening at 6:30pm, with no rehearsals during July and August.
If you have any questions about our worship or our church's mission and vision in the world, please contact Pastor Mike. He'd love to talk more in-depth with you about this progressive, inclusive and vital church.
